Sustainability is at the heart of Heritage Resorts & Golf. From the lush fairways of Heritage Golf Club to the crystal clear waters of Bel Ombre’s lagoon, sustainability is a guiding principle across the group – and with the opening of the new Heritage Marine Education Centre, this commitment continues to grow.
Where Golf and Nature Play Hand-In-Hand
The award winning golf courses, Le Château and La Réserve Golf Links, have been designed with environmental responsibility in mind, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding landscapes. Through water efficient irrigation systems, the use of native vegetation, and sustainable turf management practices, Heritage Golf Club sets an example for how golf can coexist with nature.
La Réserve Golf Links, the first and only contemporary links course in the Indian Ocean, is also one of only nine venues in Africa to have achieved GEO Certified® Development status, a globally recognised certification for sustainable course design and construction. This highlights the club’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices ‘from the ground up’.
However, the conservation efforts at Heritage Golf Club extend beyond the fairways. The club’s dedication to preserving biodiversity is evident in its eco-conscious maintenance practices which integrate and apply sustainability into every aspect of the resort, ensuring the natural beauty of Mauritius is protected for future generations.
This ethos is evident throughout the resort, with Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort and Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort maintaining Green Key certification since 2017. This internationally recognised eco label reflects their commitment to responsible tourism, from waste and energy management to marine conservation efforts.
Educating for a Sustainable Future
With the introduction of the Heritage Marine Education Centre, guests to the World Top 20 golf resort now have a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of conservation beyond its championship courses.
Developed in partnership with NGO Reef Conservation, this latest initiative strengthens Heritage Resorts & Golf’s dedication to protecting Mauritius’ natural ecosystems while offering guests a unique opportunity to engage with marine conservation firsthand.
The centre offers interactive exhibits on coral reefs, seagrass beds, and coastal forests, demonstrating how these ecosystems support marine life and help combat climate change. Marine biologists lead hands-on activities, from guided beach walks to citizen science projects, allowing guests to actively participate in preserving Mauritius’ marine heritage.
Contributing to a Healthier Plan
By learning about marine conservation, visitors gain a broader perspective on sustainability and how they can contribute to a healthier planet.
“For Mauritius, safeguarding the ocean is essential. The island’s marine ecosystems play a vital role in climate regulation, biodiversity, and local livelihoods. Through the ‘Now For Tomorrow’ sustainability programme, we are not only taking action but also inspiring others to do the same,” said Flavio Joseph from Heritage Resorts & Golf.
With world-class golf courses set within an eco-conscious resort, Heritage Golf Club is proving that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. The addition of the Heritage Marine Education Centre enriches the guest experience, reinforcing Heritage’s role as a leader in sustainable tourism and golf. Guests can support this mission by contributing to the voluntary Now for Tomorrow Fund, which supports the Heritage Marine Education Centre and fosters deeper community engagement through expanded educational outreach. Whether on the greens or by the sea, every visitor has the chance to be part of a movement that preserves the beauty of Mauritius for generations to come.
